Travel Information

Among the great joys of living in this diverse world is the opportunity to learn more about other regions of the world, to anticipate travelling there or to experience them vicariously.

Immersing in Literature

One of the most pleasurable ways to learn about travel destinations is to read literature written by residents, ex-pats or dedicated travellers. This large body of literature including travelogues, memoirs, novels, and short story collections, will inspire and provide insight into the personality of a place. Here are some suggestions:

Using Online Planning and Booking Tools

Pre-planning a trip ensures the best possible experience. Booking in advance saves considerable time and money. Knowing in advance what to expect, what attractions to see, what transportation methods to use, and what kind of accommodations and services are available allows for the most efficient use of time and the best fit for your interests. There are many excellent resources with reservation services, destination descriptions, recommendations and reviews.

These are some of our favorite travel planning websites:

Tripadvisor is a travel website which shows hotel, restaurant and attractions reviews, accommodation bookings and other travel-related content. It also includes interactive travel forums. The website services are free to users, who provide most of the content. Although there has been some controversy about biased and "fake" postings, for the most part we find this a helpful resource. We always read its reviews of hotels, vacation rentals and activities that we are considering. We also contribute reviews.

Expedia  is another mega-website that shows flights, hotels, all-inclusive vacations, vacation rentals, cars, cruises, and things to do.  We always use this site for our initial planning to see what is available and possible. Expedia can bundle reservations for additional savings. Searches are saved so following price changes is easy. We book flights and hotels on Expedia because our credit card company is linked to it and we can use accumulated “travel rewards” to significantly reduce prices. is a travel website that shows accommodations, flights, car rentals and airport taxis.  We frequently use this site to book vacation rental properties. There is an interface that allows for secure payment and communication with the property owners and a handy app that allows for managing bookings and viewing destination guides while travelling. There are a variety of discounts available for short notice getaways, off-peak deals and frequent users.

Rome2Rio is a helpful resource for figuring out how to get around. It searches any city, town, landmark, attraction or address across the globe with thousands of multi-modal routes to easily get you from A to B, listing all the possible ways to get to a destination including time and cost. It also sells tickets for trains, buses, ferries and flights.
